Freshwater Fish Fauna Surveyed throughout the Shinano River by Examining Environmental DNA

【2021.9.24】
Assistant Prof. Kodama, visiting Associate Prof. Faulks, and Prof. Hakoyama conducted a survey on September 13-14, 2021, to understand the freshwater fish fauna of the entire Shinano River. This was a large-scale survey covering 367 km from the headwaters to the mouth of the Chikuma River (Shinano River) to determine species composition by using environmental DNA (see figure). An environmental DNA survey is a method of detecting trace amounts of DNA in environmental water, which allows us to understand the habitat of fish species by analyzing river water without directly catching fish. I can't wait to see the results.
This survey is part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Feasibility Study, "Importance of Habitat Continuity in Rivers - Assessment of Impacts on Riverine Ecosystems and Conservation Measures", in the area of regional research and development of river erosion control technology (river ecology). Shinshu University and the Nagano Prefectural Fisheries Laboratory have formed a research group and started a large-scale project in 2021.
